Quito

View Ecuador in a larger map

.

Nestled in a valley of the beautiful Andes Mountains more then two miles into the sky, Quito, Ecuador’s capital city, shows off its legendary history while embracing its modern cosmopolitan flare. This charming South American city is often referred to as the cultural capital of the Americas and in 1979 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. With architecture and artifacts from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries abound, it is easy to see why this distinction was made. With its spring-like weather (average temperature range is 50-77 degrees), mountain views, and cultural diversity, Quito is sure to turn on the charm.

Turning on the Charm – A Brief Tour Guide of Quito

Here’s What We’ll All Do

Plaza Independence – Tour the cathedral, archbishop’s palace, and government palace in the religious center of Catholicism. Quito, a city just over a million people, boasts 86 churches, monasteries and convents.

San Francisco Church and Convent – Go back in time to the beginnings of this beautiful city – this church was built in 1534, just weeks after the founding of Quito.

La Compania de Jesus Church – A dazzling temple dripping in colonial gold – considered the most important religious colonial building left by the Spanish.

La Virgin de Quito – Take in a splendid panoramic view from the statue at the summit of El Panecillo.

Middle of the World – Put one foot in the southern hemisphere and one foot in the northern hemisphere when you visit the center of our planet. Located in the beautiful foothills of the Andes, this famous middle of the world monument marks the equatorial line.

Sights you May Wish to Explore on Your Own

Botanical Gardens – Let your senses take over when you encounter 5,000 plants (500 species), including Ecuador’s stunning array of orchids.

Casa de la Cultura – Delight in contemporary Ecuadorian art

Museo National del Banco Central – You may not want to miss the largest and most extensive museum in Quito with chronologically organized exhibits.
