Otavalo
Otavalo is famous throughout South America for its large, indigenous market. It is also one of the most important centers of ethnotourism. The journey from Quito to the north shows you amazing Andean landscapes as we pass through important villages such as Calderón and Cayambe. Once in the lake province of Imbabura, you’ll go to the famous, colorful market that is open everyday. The market features a dazzling array of textiles and crafts in many stalls full of ponchos, scarves, blankets, wall hangings, woven belts, hats, handbags and much more. You might find not only products from Ecuador, but from all the Americas.
A visit to Otavalo can be a day trip or you can stay overnight in a hacienda to enjoy hiking and horseback riding in the Andes. As part of a visit to Otavalo you can visit one of the small towns in the area such as Peguche, or Cotacachi, to observe the craftwork of the local artisans. You’ll also learn some of their culture and daily life style. A short hike around the Cuicocha Lake is also a possibility.
Just outside of Otavalo, overlooking lake San Pedro and the city, is the Parque del Condor. Its purpose is to protect, to rescue, to rehabilitate and reintroduce the Andean Condor, owls and other birds of prey in their habitat. You can take your best bird pictures at close range as you admire condors, vultures, falcons, eagles, and owls. Twice a day there is a special presentation of the birds.
